No one needs to be reminded of the large number of police members who lose their lives in the line of duty. This fact echoes between the pages of each newspaper. A police member who selflessly gave his or her life in the attempt to better society, becomes a mere number in our minds. When this happens the human factor is forgotten. We forget that there were people who cared for this individual and they lost not only a part of their lives, a parent or spouse, but also the primary bread-winner. It is perhaps important that we, remind ourselves of the wise words of JW von Goethe who once wrote; "You can easily judge the character of a man by how he treats those who can do nothing for him ."
The sole aim of the Widows and Orpans Fund for members of the South African Police Service is to give financial assistance to those people who are left behind. The Fund financially relies on membership fees from police members, donations and fund-raising projects.
